Arlington’s Current Math Curriculum

Arlington Math Parents was formed after several of our children reported feeling bored and frustrated with their math education. Our research discovered several aspects of the math curriculum at Arlington Public Schools (APS) which concerned us. In particular:

  • There is no organized effort to provide any advanced math education to children in APS prior to middle school.
  • The most advanced math track in APS is unavailable to almost every child:
    • A single test in 5th grade determines eligibility, with no opportunity to re-take it.
    • In 2024, 30% of students took the test, but only 10% of those students passed (3% of the entire student body). Even some students who answered every question correctly were denied admission!
    • The test will be eliminated next year, with no clear plan on how it will be replaced.
  • The rise of Russian School of Math, AOPS, and other math enrichment programs indicate demand for better math education. More than 20% of Arlington students attend extracurricular math enrichment.

Our Goals

  • Ensure rigorous and challenging math expectations throughout K-12 through improved opt-out pathways.
  • Strengthen public school foundations for competitive opportunities in an increasingly Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) based economic environment.
